Phillips Fox

With 1500 people in 10 offices across 3 countries, Phillips Fox is one of the largest law firms in Australasia . 

Our culture is one that embraces the individual, rewards innovative thinking and supports new ideas in the pursuit of excellence.  In recent years, the legal industry has enjoyed a lower turnover rate in a relatively stable economy.  As the economy shows signs of recovery, many law firms will look at ways to capitilise on a changing recruitment market.  Whilst a number of firms have been looking at freezing budgets and putting projects on hold, Phillips Fox, as an innovative player was determined to be at the forefront of other longer term initiatives and invest in a strategic recruitment system. 

In order to achieve our goal we developed firm-wide strategies, especially in relation to best practice recruitment processes.  With this document, we did some initial research into various providers, but were concerned by the amount of detail and understanding required to make a strategically sound decision about the software that would meet our requirements, as well as allow for development in the future.  Pinpoint HRM was recommended as a source of expert knowledge.  This was not only due to experience around the selection and implementation of recruitment software, but more importantly due to their staff’s first hand experience in operating these types of tools within a legal environment. 

Pinpoint completed an extensive and all-encompassing scoping study to provide us with a full understanding of issues specific to the legal industry and our business in particular.  This study and its outcomes focused on streamlining recruitment processes and reducing recruitment costs within our existing HR structure.  Pinpoint also helped us identify other areas of best practice for our existing processes.  This then enabled us to go to market with a full understanding of what recruitment software should deliver.

Once we were clear on our requirements, Pinpoint worked closely with us to evaluate and select the most appropriate software in terms of functionality, cost and legal industry compatibility.  Our main concern when evaluating technology was making sure we had a full understanding of the software involved – without Pinpoint, this would have been a very time consuming task. 

With graduate recruitment fast approaching, our goal for implementation was to have the system up and running before that time.  Pinpoint facilitated that implementation, providing the skilled resources and experience to enable us to achieve our goal without substantially reducing our capacity to keep up to date with our everyday tasks.  We controlled the amount of input we gave, but felt safe in the knowledge that best practice initiatives offered by Pinpoint were being developed with knowledge of the legal industry and an understanding of our business, not just assessed at the technology level.  Not only did Pinpoint provide constant and consistent support, but also coordinated other important elements of the process such as change and project management.

We have engaged Pinpoint for at least the next 12 months to assist us in managing the software, as well as ensuring we get the maximum possible benefit from it.  This includes building more effective screening mechanisms, developing competency frameworks, talent pool management, reporting and system administration, as well as providing guidance on the latest innovation in technology and practices, keeping us at the forefront of an increasingly competitive labour market.

As the Recruitment Project Manager for Phillips Fox, I have had extensive exposure to the team at Pinpoint.  We have found them to be prompt, efficient, and always approachable, especially as they really took the time to understand us and our particular needs.  Working in a generalist HR team does not leave much time for extra projects, but Pinpoint has ensured that we were able to nationally project-manage this innovation and integrate it into the wider Phillips Fox environment.  We always knew we were working with tight deadlines, but have achieved our goals without sacrificing capacity in other areas of the business, a great achievement for us all.
